According to three people familiar with the matter, Hyundai intends to enter the US pickup truck market and may cooperate with Chrysler.
According to previous media reports, Hyundai Motor manufactured a Hyundai pickup truck model on the Chrysler Ram pickup truck platform at the beginning of the year, and conducted market tests on the car, and found that consumers responded positively, so Hyundai Motor decided to develop a pickup truck model and enter the US pickup truck market.
The partnership with Hyundai Motor will help Chrysler realize its production expansion aspirations, while also reducing production costs for Ram pickup truck models. Ram is the third best-selling truck brand in the world.
The U.S. pickup truck market has high profit margins, but competition is fierce, and Nissan and Toyota have not been able to beat Detroit companies in this area. This is also one of the starting points of Hyundai's cooperation with Chrysler.
However, people familiar with the matter also revealed that Chrysler and Fiat CEO Marchionne rejected Hyundai's cooperation proposal in February, and said that Chrysler's current strategic focus is to implement Fiat's "revitalization plan." However, Hyundai has not abandoned the cooperation plan and is still trying to convince Chrysler.
In response to the news, Chrysler press spokesman Gualberto Ranieri declined to comment on any comments.
